Popular opinion is that carbonated drinks are by definition unhealthy. But might this be a popular myth?

In the United States of America, we have flavored carbonated drinks which we call soda pop. What gives soda pop its “fizz?” Carbonation.

In almost all soft drinks, it is carbonation which gives these drinks their distinctive taste. That fizzy taste is caused by diluted carbonic acid, not, as many believe, by the bubbles.

Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water, is plain water into which CO2 gas has been dissolved, and is the major ingredient of most “soft drinks”.

In the past, these drinks were made at home by combining water in a seltzer bottle with CO2. Club soda, usually identical to plain carbonated water, could possibly contain a small pinch of salt or trace minerals. Home-made soda pop could taste more salty than normal because of these trace ingredients. Add some drops of concentrated flavors and you have good ole’ soda pop.
