Will Learning How To Detox Promote Your Immune System

For as long as I can remember I’ve always been lucky with my health. I’ve hardly ever been ill, and colds and viruses never seem to latch on to me - or at least not that lasted longer than about 12 hours. So when I completely lost all my energy and was feeling run down all the time it was quite a shock to my system, and struggling to find the energy to even get out of bed in the morning. I’d seen doctors and consultants galore and had so many tests my arm was like a pin cushion, but every one showed nothing wrong.

I finally went to see an alternative health therapist one day who intimated that I would likely benefit from a detox diet, and generally learning about to detox your body and see how toxins accumulate in my body and impact my wellbeing and energy levels. From what people were telling me it was clear that detoxing had a lot to offer, so took it upon myself to learn as much about the process as possible, and why so many alternative and complementary health practitioners recommend doing a detox and recommend starting with the 7 day detox diet so avidly.

Another thing she suggested to me was to try a foot detox. I now use a foot spa about twice a week, but as a suitable alternative, the detox foot patches can work just as well - but with the patches you don’t get a relaxing foot massage at the same time

Here’s what I learnt to detox your body.

Make sure you drink plenty of water

Drinking plenty of fluid is absolutely vital while you are following a detoxification diet because the water will help your body excrete toxins from your system. It also helps to prevent constipation, reduce bloating, and helps reduce the signs of aging by plumping up your skin. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day (about 2 liters), and more when you exercise.

As a rough guide, aim to drink an extra half liter of water for every hour you exercise. Choose still mineral water, or tap water that has been filtered, or boiled and then cooled. Ideally drink water that is at room temperature. Herbal teas are a great alternative in helping your reach your daily quote - loose leaf tea is the better option if it’s available. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow are particularly good as their essential oils assist in the detox process. Roibosch and green tea is also beneficial as it is rich in antioxidants.

Choose Organic Food Where Possible

You do not need to switch to a totally organic diet on a detox diet, as organic produce is normally higher priced than non organic equivalents, but a little organic produce will go a long way to getting you started.

It’s not a major problem if you can’t get hold of any organic produce. Just eating plenty of fresh fruits and veg is more important - even if they are non-organic - than skimp on quantities. However, there are some good reasons for having as much as possible of organic produce on a healthy detox diet.

The use of artificial chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers are not allowed when growing organic foods, so they contain the lowest possible amounts of artificial, potentially toxic chemicals (such as nitrates). The practice of organic farming is very contentious due to the fact that there is growing evidence that the cumulative impact of pesticide residues may be related to a lot of the serious health issues we face today.

Organic foods undergo minimal processing. Ultimately this means organic foods not genetically modified and are free from hydrogenated fats and artificial additives. And you may notice that organic foods also taste better and have much deeper flavors.
